Recreational therapy, sometimes called therapeutic recreation, is similar to other therapies like psychotherapy, counseling, occupational therapy, and physical therapy. RT uses therapeutic techniques to change and improve the functioning of a person who has a physical, mental, or cognitive disability.
Recreational therapists have simular goals and backgrounds as other therapists, but our methodology is a little different. RT is an action-based therapy that uses a clients’ strengths and talents to correct problem behaviors.
Recreational Therapists in North Carolina must be licensed by the state.
Behavior is complex, and interpersonal skills are even more so. Many kids who exhibit behavioral and emotional troubles have difficulty responding to stimuli appropriately for a variety of reasons, and there isn’t a one-size-fits-all cure. While beneficial for some, traditional behavior intervention plans and talk therapy simply won’t work for every kid.
Language is processed separately – in a different part of the brain – than action and experience. Often people react to some stimulus before they are able to describe and explain what is happening. Even if a child has the words and seems to understand concepts in a therapy session, that child might not be able to reprocess what was said in therapy outside of that enviroment.
Is it common for your child not to apply what he just talked about? Perhaps your child may benefit from our recreational therapy services.
